Dr. Kwon's background and approach to clinical work
Dr. Kwon’s clinical practice is informed and influenced by the doctoral trainings at APA accredited programs and his clinical experiences accrued in diverse mental health settings. Specifically, as a behavioral scientist, Dr. Kwon specialized the psychological assessments, and was involved in psychometric studies of which findings were regularly shared in professional communities. As a mental health provider, he worked with patients diagnosed with affective disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and paraphilic disorders at inpatient or outpatient institutions. Dr. Kwon occasionally served as an expert witness for court proceedings in relation to patients with psycho-legal complications. Fluent in Korean, Dr. Kwon appreciated the rare opportunities to work with monolingual Korean patients.
Depending on patients’ interests and needs, Dr. Kwon works eclectically with existential, modern psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral (DBT in particular), and gestalt emphasis. Patients’ clinical themes or concerns often involved grief, traumatic experiences, chronic/acute anger, shame/guilt, emotional/sexual abuse, interpersonal skill deficits, poor sense of self and others, and general demoralization. Working with Dr. Kwon, patients describe a progressively increasing awareness of his/her internal experiences and the emotional skills for self-regulation that are often accompanied by the compassion for self and others and the sense of inner freedom and peace.
